Concert series Improvisation International

Axel Dörner – trumpet
Michel Doneda – soprano saxophon
Emilio Gordoa – vibraphone
Michael Vorfeld – drums

Instead of the originally announced concert Parole: Lautpoesie und Musik, which had to be cancelled due to health reasons, we present a great quartet line-up: The trumpet player Axel Dörner, the saxophonist Michel Doneda, the vibraphonist Emilio Gordoa and the percussionist Michael Vorfeld. All four belong to the most important voices of the European experimental and improvisation music scene and guarantee the highest quality. Together they immerse themselves in intimate sound worlds and repeatedly break through their own routines in order to give space their fascination of the unpredictable.

The prominence and esteem of Axel Dörner and Emilio Gordoa can also be seen from the honours recently awarded to them: Axel Dörner received the Berlin Jazz Prize 2019, which is awarded by the Kulturradio of rbb and the Senate Administration for Culture and Europe. “By consciously abandoning traditional ways of playing, Axel Dörner creates completely new (sound) spaces that demand great attention and a desire for the unexpected from the listeners”, the jury justified its decision. Axel Dörner occupies a singular place in the international jazz scene and is an important point of reference and influence for musicians far beyond Germany. Emilio Gordoa is currently improviser in residence at the moers festival 2019. According to the festival, he is “a prime example of the younger generation of highly interesting improvisers who stand out for their diversity of content and style and can look back on an excellent and broad artistic education”.

Michel Doneda and Michael Vorfeld also belong to the particularly interesting figures of the scene: Michel Doneda not only shaped the French improvisation scene since the beginning of the 1980s, toured worldwide and released over 50 recordings. In addition to his work as a musician, Michael Vorfeld is also a visual artist, playing percussion and self-designed string instruments and realising electro-acoustic sound works. He develops site-specific installations and performances with light and sound, works with photography and film.

Here you can find a concert of the quartet (with Michael Thieke instead of Michel Doneda): Dörner – Thieke – Vorfeld – Gordoa
