Recorded Landscapes
La Barca Vá: Duo Sabine Vogel & Marta Zapparoli
5 Seen: Solo Sabine Vogel

Sabine Vogel (DE): amplified flutes, bansuri in water, objects, video
Marta Zapparoli (IT/DE): radio receiver, antennas, tapes

Recorded Landscapes is a series of audiovisual pieces by flautist and composer Sabine Vogel, which deal with notions of home, nature and identity. Two of these will be presented, one of them in a duo with the Italian sound artist Marta Zapparoli: La Barca Vá (duo) and 5 Seen (solo).

Sabine Vogel says about her project: “The landscape in which I grow up shapes me. The things that I experience there, the games that I play, the impressions that I get, leave an imprint on my ‘being’, in my ‘layers of memory’. There is a connection between me and this place, this landscape. The landscape in which you grew up can give you a strong sense of home. As musicians we travel a lot, we are, so to speak, ‘at home all over the world’, but we usually have our roots in a very specific place. The individual biography of the musicians becomes the starting point of my compositions; it is, as it were, directly geographically inscribed in them.

What is it like when I share this place with someone? If someone sees this place through my eyes, gets to know it, perceives it? What if I share the stories I experienced there with this person? This can convey a deeper understanding of the respective culture and also the people and thus of course also have an impact on the music and the creative work together. Through shared experiences, tuning into the environment, hearing, perceiving, improvising and experimenting, the players approach the respective location. An audiovisual composition is created from the material, to which the players then add a new layer of sound in real time and thus create the process of an emerging ‘soundscape’ over and over again.

A rock formation manifests the creation process of a landscape, a recording process of movement and evolution. Visual details of such formations can be treated as graphic scores that are played to turn landscape into sound and this in turn can be recorded again; Recorded Landscapes is thus the manifestation of the process of an emerging landscape. What does this process of an emerging landscape entail? Isn’t it the case that every presence of an animal or a person changes the landscape for the moment of ‘being’? And does the landscape change me too?”

Sabine Vogel deals intensively with modern playing techniques, sound and improvisation and has developed her own vocabulary on her instrument, both acoustically and with the addition of electronic equipment and certain microphones. In her compositions she mixes flute sounds from the inside of her flutes, which are often on the threshold of the inaudible, the microcosm of her sound world, so to speak, with field recordings – recordings from the outside, the macrocosm. In her site-specific works, sound installations and live performances in nature, she deals with sound, place, time, moment and memory. Marta Zapparoli is an Italian sound and improvisation artist, performer and self-taught researcher whose career began in the musical underground scene in Bologna. At the age of 15 she began her training in fine arts and soprano saxophone and was also active in the experimental directions of theater, dance, performance and radio production. Since 2000 she has been particularly interested in experimental noise music and was a co-founder of the Hotelnuclear collective. She then developed her solo project, the focus of which is primarily on acoustic ecologies, outdoor recordings and noise pollution as well as electromagnetic frequencies. Since 2014 she has been working on a new project on “Inaudible Sounds”, which is based on the reception and recordings of phenomena made worldwide by radio frequencies, human-made noise signals, wireless communication and natural radio (VLF), which she uses in her live performances, sound interventions and installations.

Fire, earth, water and air: these four elements provide ideas when we go in search of sounds and improvise musically together. We explore different instruments and sounding materials to find out how we can represent these four natural phenomena musically. We trace their atmospheres, characteristics, sounds and noises and bring them to life through music.

In a second step we will use our musical discoveries to set music to pictures, photographs or short videos. From this we will develop our own sound recordings, which can be used for further improvising. Or we will develop small performances in space, in which we can also include movement, theatre or painted/drawn objects.

At the end of the workshop, if the group so wishes, we can present our improvised discoveries in a small final performance (for friends and parents).

Workshop in German language.

Concert + Talk in English

Svetlana Maraš (RS / CH) – electronics
Biliana Voutchkova (BG / DE) – violin, voice

Moderation: Mathias Maschat

As a prelude to our symposium Erfahrungsraum Improvisation, the Serbian sound artist Svetlana Maraš and the Bulgarian-German violinist Biliana Voutchkova are guests in our concert series Sound & Lecture. Moderated by Mathias Maschat, the two experienced improvisers and improvisation teachers talk about what improvisation means to them and what concerns them, as teachers, with the mediating their art.

Svetlana Maraš has given numerous courses for children and has been appointed professor for creative music technology and co-director of the Basel electronic studio at the FHNW University of Music ((Fachhochschule Nordwestschweiz) from September 2021. Biliana Voutchkova gives international workshops at universities and festivals and is also a workshop leader at the exploratorium. Musically, Svetlana Maraš and Biliana Voutchkova build on their long-term collaboration with new ideas.

Svetlana Maraš works at the intersection of experimental music, sound art and new media. Graduated at the renowned Aalto University (Helsinki) where she worked as a research assistant, she also received training at places like Bang on a Can Summer Institute (MASSMoCA), Columbia University – School of the Arts, Mozarteum Summer Academy, KlangKunstBühne at UDK (Berlin), The Berklee Summer School, Darmstadt International Summer Course, and many other places. Her article Thingification of compositional process – emergence and autonomy of extra-musical object in Western Art Music was published as a book chapter in 2017. Svetlana Maraš often gives workshops and masterclasses on programming and new music technology for kids and adults, and she lectures on topics related to experimental music and sound art. As composer in residence and artistic director of Radio Belgrade’s Electronic Studio since 2016, she has initiated various projects and activities such as EMS Synthi 100 restoration, artist residencies and educational programs.

Biliana Voutchkova is a devoted interdisciplinary artist, violinist, performer, composer, improviser and curator. Her constant creative research spans the widest possible range of sound, movement and vision. Her extended sonic, technical and physical capacities evolved into the development of a highly individual artistic language. Based between Berlin and her rural residency on the black sea coast of Bulgaria, Biliana Voutchkova works internationally as a soloist, in group and collaborative settings and with renowned ensembles. Her often unconventional projects include original site specific works, performances, concerts, long durational and multi-disciplinary formats. Alongside her other activities, she is constantly engaged with the organization and presentation of informal non-institutional events, reaching out and building lasting relationships to her local communities.
