Series “Improvisation International”

Saadet Türköz (TR/CH) – vocals
Martin Schütz (CH) – cello
Lionel Friedli (CH) – drums

The Kazakh-Turkish singer Saadet Türköz and cellist-improviser Martin Schütz from Biel have been playing together for many years. Under the title song dreaming they created a kind of folklore imaginaire.

While in free improvisation Türköz repeatedly draws on her rich fund of archaic songs from the region from which she originates, Schütz improvises freely and abstractly in the here and now. The spirit inherent in this music gives the abstract the power of the archaic and the archaic the complexity of the contemporary. A kind of simulacra are created: dream images in which times, motifs and myths collide instead of following one another in epochs. Since a little while the fantastic drummer Lionel Friedli is the third voice in song dreaming. A deep and ecstatic musical celebration.

Türköz collaborated with leading figures of the improvisation scene such as Peter Kowald, Joëlle Léandre, Urs Leimgruber, Elliot Sharp, Okkyung Lee, Eyvind Kang, Peggy Lee, Xu Fengxia, Carl Stone, Miya Masaoka, Mark Dresser and Larry Ochs. Schütz’s musical partners included Butch Morris, Shelley Hirsch, Barre Phillips and Paul Lovens. Above all, he is known for his trio Koch-Schütz-Studer (Hans Koch, Freddy Studer), with which also Türköz has performed.
