Concert series Improvisation International

Trevor Watts – saxophones
Alison Blunt – violin
Hannah Marshall – cello
Veryan Weston – piano

The saxophonist Trevor Watts is an important key figure not only in the British improvisation scene. Together with John Stevens and Paul Rutherford in 1965 he founded the famous and influential Spontaneous Music Ensemble. He also worked with free jazz greats such as Don Cherry, Archie Shepp or Steve Lacy and cooperated frequently with musicians from African countries (Moiré Music and others). This year, it’s his 80th birthday, which he celebrates at various locations with jubilee concerts – one of them at the exploratorium berlin!

With his longtime ensemble and duo partner, the pianist Veryan Weston, he founded in the late 1960s, the group Amalgam, in which a. o. also the AMM guitarist Keith Rowe was involved. Since then, they work together regularly, improvising freely as well as in Trevor Watts’ band Moiré Music; musically, they share a variety of interests, – in addition to the improvisation in particular with regard to the use of certain rhythmic ideas.

Together, they released several Dialogues recordings: 6 dialogues (2001), 5 more dialogues (2011), Dialogues in two places (2011) and Dialogues for Ornette! (2015). After many collaborations in the context of these duo dialogues Watts and Weston wanted to open their music to other musicians and at the same time expand their own scope. The choice fell on the excellent and internationally active string players Hannah Marshall (cello) and Alison Blunt (violin), after they had previously made connections through various collaborations between them. In 2017, the highly acclaimed Dialogues with Strings project (CD 2017), which is expected by all four with the greatest expectations, was premiered at London’s Café Oto.

Their music is based on trust and openness, honesty and creative energy – just them right thing for a birthday concert at the exploratorium!

“And the next poetry of strings – Incredible quartet with Trevor Watts, Veryan Weston, Hannah Marshall & Alison Blunt !!! Free improvisation in contemporary way or exactly opposite. With emotions and crazy load of energy. Maybe the best event on Festival… so far!!!” (Ad Lib Festival in Warsaw, October 2017)

“Trevor Watts and Veryan Weston have collaborated for many years, as have cellist Hannah Marshall and violinist Alison Blunt, while there have been various crossovers between the two duos. When all four play together, the result is quicksilver improvisation with a remarkable range of moods.” (The Columns, Soundcheck, the Wire, January 2018)

“It is always a pleasure to see Trevor Watts blooming and vital as he always was since I’ve first met him well over fifty years ago. I wish for many more years of him being as productive and artistically challenging, as he still is today. British Jazz would have never been what it is today without his contribution. Respect!” (Adam Barusch, January 2018)
