Concert series Improvisation International
AMM – legendary pioneers of free improvisation!
“It should be part of our secret that we have never played too much,” said percussionist Eddie Prévost about the band founded in 1965 by him and the inventor of table top guitar Keith Rowe. For 54 years now, the British have been “searching for sounds”, as famously said composer Cornelius Cardew, who himself was a member of the band for ten years. And indeed – AMM explore their musical material, making full use of tonal possibilities, layering layers of sound, growing out of silence. “Laminar” Evan Parker called this original style. The pianist John Tilbury, influential protagonist of British New Music, has been an integral part of the group since 1980. Keith Rowe has been out of the band for 15 years and has only been back for a short time. Even if AMM “never played too much” – now the core players of this “barely worded mystery” (Jim O’Rourke) is playing at exploratorium berlin!
