Concert series Improvisation International
The Chilean cellist Isidora Edwards is the link in this new trio: She played in duo with both the British guitarist John Russell and with the Bulgarian-German violinist Biliana Voutchkova. This led to the idea of a merger as an ensemble, which is premiered at exploratorium.
A leading figure in the UK improvised music scene, John Russell is internationally respected for his guitar playing and continuing work within the field. He initiated and is responsible for running Mopomoso which, apart from hosting the UK’s longest unbroken concert series of freely improvised music, also organises special events and workshops. In 2016 he co-founded, with Dublin based pianist Paul G Smyth, the label Weekertoft specialising in high quality releases of improvised music.
Biliana Voutchkova is a thoroughly engaged violinist, composer-performer and improviser who combines regular performances of major solo violin/ensemble works, new music by contemporary composers often written for her, and her own work with performative, long length formats, real time composition and improvisation. Her constant research as a creative artist spans the widest possible range of sound and movement and extends her sonic, technical and physical capacities evolving into the development of a highly individual artistic language.
Isidora Edwards’s work is based on the investigation about the sound possibilities of the cello, thought as geography full of fissures and hidden retreats. Her interests are focused on searching in the spectrum of improvised music, in the fields of dance, movement, human voice and its philosophical relations with space, time and audience.
Fri – Sun, 6. – 8.12. (Saal 1) John Russell will be giving our special workshop in this semester under the title Free Improvisation with John Russell.
