Sofia Jernberg (NO) – voice
Sebastian Gramss (DE) – doublebass
Etienne Nillesen (NL) – prepared snare drum

In this trio, the award-winning Swedish-Ethiopian singer Sofia Jernberg, the exceptional Cologne bassist Sebastian Gramss and the specialist for prepared snare drum Etienne Nillesen meet for a liberated and liberating dialogue. The three musicians have been working together for a long time, most recently in a cooperation of the Double Bass Orchestra BASSMASSE in Cologne.

Listen, … never stop, at the moment bring the purest, finest sound to the surface and feel the unheard. With an unrestrained urge for a new sound, the trio develops a very own musical language – beyond all drawers and genres. Free – without mesh and ripcord – but always appealing and sophisticated. “Highly virtuoso, full of care in detail – all in all: a miracle!” (DA Echo 2018)

Sofia Jernberg is the leader (together with the pianist Cecilia Persson) of the chamber jazz group Paavo. The group received the “jazz group of the year” award from Swedish Radio. She became known to a bigger audience as solo singer in Mats Gustafsson’s Fire! Orchestra. Sebastian Gramss is a double bass virtuoso and composer of jazz and contemporary music. In 2013 and 2018 he received the ECHO Jazz award (national instrumentalist of the year). in the field of improvisation he worked with musicians such as Marilyn Crispell, Fred Frith, Sidsel Endresen, Alexander von Schlippenbach, Tom Cora, Elliott Sharp, Peter Kowald, Zeena Parkins, Peter Brötzmann, John Tilbury, Philip Zoubek, Barre Phillips, Tetsu Saitoh, Mark Dresser, Barry Guy, William Parker, Joëlle Léandre a. m. m. The snare drum is a core part of Etienne Nillesen’s artistic practice. With an instrumental and physical approach, he explores and pushes the limits of the natural acoustics of the snare drum using conventional playing techniques as well as extended techniques and preparations.
