How to create Suspense and Surprise

Friday, 27. October, 20 h   – cancelled! –

Lecture with Richard DoustWhat is it about some concerts that keeps us on the edge of our seats ? How do we actually listen to a developing musical idea ? Is music like a story ?

To ask all these questions, we’ll be making a journey into the ‘storiness’ of music by looking at three fundamental components of story-like things: surprise, curiosity and suspense.

This interactive lecture presents a new formal model of suspense and shows ways recent psychological theories of entertainment and narrative can inspire creative processes.

The subject should be of interest to people in all the performing arts, not just musicians.

These first insights will be developed and deepened in the following workshop on Saturday and Sunday (please register separately).
