Thomas Gerwin
“Sounds are living things. They are born, spend a certain amount of time in certain places and then die. They love to form social organisms.”
Thomas Gerwin is a classically trained composer and sound artist who came to improvisation and electroacoustic music at an early age and has also worked intensively in the field of “soundscape composition” and radio art since 1990.
Primarily in his Berlin studio inter art project, he composes instrumental and (live) electronic works for concerts and performances, stages experimental audio pieces and creates sound installations and objects. As a means of expression for his “situational” spatial art works, he often uses musicians, live electronics, theater, dance, film, light and sculpture, and experiments in an interdisciplinary manner with new concert and reception formats for artistic sound.
Gerwin is the founder and artistic director of the annual “International Sound Art Festival Berlin” (since 2004), the “Chamber Ensemble ad hoc” and the concert series “Sound Worlds ad hoc”. His scores are published by Ricordi/Universal. He has received numerous national and international prizes and scholarships, and his works are performed, broadcast and exhibited worldwide.
