Present-Time Composition (PTC®️) is a profound and systematic approach to collective improvisation that is characterised by compositional/choreographic thinking. Invented by Alan Bern in 2005 for music improvisation, a group of Berlin choreographers and dancers began to ‘translate’ the method to dance improvisation in the mid-2010s. While PTC®️ for music has been part of the exploratorium berlin programme for many years, we are offering PTC®️ for dance for the first time. We will develop simultaneous ‘top-down’ thinking (as choreographers) and ‘bottom-up’ action (as dancers). Led by Valentin Schmehl, a leader of the original PTC dance research group, and Alan Bern, the founder of the PTC method, this workshop is aimed at trained dancers, but is also open to people with little dance experience who are comfortable in their bodies and in movement.
