Talk in English
Guest: Andrea Parkins
Moderation: Mathias Maschat
Guest in the 8th edition of Mathias Maschat’s key_concepts series is sound artist, composer, and electroacoustic improviser Andrea Parkins. In her work she engages with interactive electronics as both material and process, focusing especially on aspects of dislocation. In many ways, she considers improvisation as the foundation of her artistic work; in this broader context her particular interest is directed to the multiple correspondences between embodied experience, materiality, sound, site, and space. Only recently Andrea Parkins has defended her PhD project at the Norwegian Academy of Music (NMH), entitled “Sonic Spaces for the Stray”: (Dif)Fusing Dis-location in Sound Installation and Performance. Working with an array of sonic materials – amplified drawing tools, objects and surfaces, electronic feedback, custom-built software and acoustic instruments – her research explores these correspondences and examines subjectivity and its embodiment.
In the talk, Andrea Parkins discusses the connections and slippages between the above mentioned aspects and gives examples from her own artistic work and experience. In the course of the key_concept series, the talk can be understood as a continuation of Mathias Maschat’s talks with Magda Mayas, Adam Pultz Melbye, and Corinna Eikmeier, in which the role of physicality and materiality in improvisation have also been discussed.
Andrea Parkins’ projects encompass multi-channel sound and intermedia installations; electroacoustic performances and compositions; and scores for contemporary dance, experimental film and intermedia performance. Her work has been presented at the Whitney Museum of American Art, Experimental Intermedia (NYC), Kunsthalle Basel, Kunsthall Bergen, Borderline Festival (Athens); NEXT (Bratislava), among many others. Recent projects include her site-responsive 14-channel spatial audio and visual installation, Sonic Spaces for the Stray, presented in 2021 at ROM for kunst og arkitektur in Oslo; her performance/installation, Two Rooms, Variation 1, for 40 loudspeakers and Solo Performer, premiered in 2016 at Akousma Festival in Montreal; and her amplified performance drawing series, implemented in 2017 at the Rauschenberg Residency in Captiva, Florida. She has been an invited resident artist at Rauschenberg Residency (US), Elektronmusikstudion-EMS Stockholm, Q-02 Workspace for Experimental Music and Sound Art (Brussels), Harvestworks Digital Media Arts Center (US), Performing Arts Forum (FR), and by Frei und Hanseastadt Hamburg Kulturbehoerde. She holds an MFA in Visual Arts from Rutgers University, and has gained her PhD in the Artistic Research Programme at Norwegian Academy of Music.
In 2022–2023, Andrea Parkins is a fellow of the Berlin Artistic Research Grant Programme (“Berliner Förderprogramm Künstlerische Forschung”).
