imp[or]trait #1: Mazen Kerbaj and the Irtijal International Festival of Experimental Music in Lebanon

imp[or]trait is a new series of the Denkraum Improvisation, in which artists, scenes or initiatives related to improvisation are being portrayed. The first guest is the Lebanese trumpet player, visual artist and organizer Mazen Kerbaj, who lives in Berlin since 2015 and is part of the Berlin and Beirut as well as the international scene of improvised music. Mazen Kerbaj is also one of the pioneer voices of experimental music in the Arab world and a co-founder of the Irtijal International Festival of Experimental Music in Lebanon.

Mathias Maschat talks with Mazen Kerbaj about his work and the festival, which in 2020 is in its 20th year of existence. Also, Mazen Kerbaj is going to play short pieces of unprepared solo trumpet.

The Frith – Eraslan – Malmendier – Weil concert, originally planned for this day, had to be postponed to 2021 due to corona pandemic.
