Charlotte Hug

Composer-performer, improviser, draughtswoman, media artist, teaching artist

With her innovative musical-visual performances at special locations and her spatial scores with son-icons (visual music), Swiss artist Charlotte Hug has created a new genre of transdisciplinary, spatial-scenic music and art.

As an extreme musician with voice and viola, hybrid sound mixtures are her specialty. This creates her unmistakable sound language. Hug holds degrees in music and fine arts, has won various prizes and artist residencies in Berlin, Paris, London, Johannesburg and Shanghai, was “Artiste Etoile” at the Lucerne Festival and was nominated for the Classic:Next – Innovation Award 2019.

Hug’s music is documented in an extensive discography, including recordings with Elliott Sharp, Maggie Nicols, Lucas Niggli, several CDs with the London Stellari String Quartet, her own choral and orchestral works and three solo CDs on international labels. Her intermedia compositions are performed by international ensembles, choirs and orchestras as well as interdisciplinary formations.

In addition to exhibitions in galleries and museums, her busy concert schedule has taken her to major festivals in Europe, North and Latin America, Canada, South Africa, Russia and China as an improviser, soloist with voice and viola, composer and conductor of her own works. Hug is a lecturer at the Lucerne University of Music and she initiated and directs the Creation & Scenario in Music course at the Zurich University of the Arts.
