Isabelle Duthoit

Isabelle Duthoit is a vocalist and clarinetist who studied clarinet at the CNSM in Lyon with Jacques Di Donato. Early on, she turned toward contemporary music, collaborating with composers such as Georges Aperghis, Gilbert Amy, Didier d’Adamo, and Klaus Huber, and found her artistic home in free improvisation. She performs and collaborates with numerous artists from the international experimental music scene.

Deeply engaged with the human voice, she has been developing a unique and highly personal vocal technique for nearly twenty years. As Lê Quan Ninh writes, “a language before language, a voice of origin. To listen to Isabelle Duthoit is to encounter a voice that says nothing, yet reactivates primary sensations connected to sound and to its intimacy—sensations perceived far more through the skin than through the ears.”
