Valentin Schmehl

is a performer, dramaturge and cultural activist. His socio-cultural, interdisciplinary and intercultural projects always combine artistic, social and scientific practices and perspectives. He is committed to the vision of a new kind of social institution with the ultimate goal of empowerment, the Other Music Academy in Weimar (www.othermusicacademy.eu).

Valentin gives workshops on improvisation, impulse work and intimacy. As part of an international team of artists, he trains and researches under Dr Alan Bern in the improvisation method ‘Present Time Composition’ with foundations in cognitive science and dance science.
As a performer, he works internationally in interdisciplinary environments for stage and film, including the Staatsoper Unter den Linden Berlin, the Palestinian National Theatre Al Hakawati, the Lofft Leipzig, the Festspielhaus Hellerau Dresden, the Maison des Cinéastes Nouakchott (MR), Nu Dagbe Circus Cotonou (Benin) and the Beit Shapira Petah-Tikva (ISR).

Valentin’s work is repeatedly supported by institutions such as the German Federal Cultural Foundation, Open Society Foundations, the German National Academic Foundation, the Thuringian State Chancellery, Aktion Mensch, the Goethe Institute and the Bosch Alumni Network. His project ‘Altenburg am Meer’ received the 3rd Innovation Award Socioculture 2021.
