The quartet Dubucc unites different cultural and aesthetic languages in its music. In a mesh of percussive flow, electronics and conventional and extended instrumental sounds, a dramaturgy emerges in which the overlapping structures and impulsive actions develop a clear presence and intensity.
The three Berliners Alexander Frangenheim, Andreas Voccia and Céline Voccia move in different scenes of improvisation, free jazz, Echtzeitmusik and reductionism and are familiar with each other through numerous concerts and projects. In their collaboration, which began in 2023, they are now meeting for the first time in the context of a joint project. The Senegalese percussionist Dudù Kouate adds an organising element to Dubucc. With his fine percussive flow of sound, he creates a musical space in which the other musicians move in response or in contrast. The different aesthetic levels allow the players to open up and reposition their respective musical material. The familiar takes on a new meaning and finds new visions.
Alexander Frangenheim has worked with many musicians in the field of free improvisation since the late 1980s. He played in Günter Christmann’s vario34 and in the ensemble Zeitkratzer and intensively pursued collaborations with dance (including Julyen Hamilton and Benoît Lachambre). Under the label concepts of doing, he has organised 18 festivals for improvisation, new music and interaction with dance. His latest CD releases are NAIL in Ulrichsberg with Roger Turner and Michel Doneda, and Basic Tracks – Baltimore New York in duo with trombonist Patrick Crossland.
Dudù Kouate was born in Senegal in 1963 into a family of griots, who are known for preserving African cultural and musical traditions. After studying humanities in Senegal, he went to Europe and taught African percussion in Bergamo. As a musician, Dudù Kouate has been involved in theatre, film, dance and poetry projects. Since 2017, he has been a member of the historic Art Ensemble of Chicago, with whom he tours worldwide. Dudù Kouate has lived in Berlin since 2024.
Andreas Voccia is a Berlin-based musician and video artist. Originally trained as a jazz guitarist, he now works with a modular synthesiser to implement compositional practices from contemporary classical music in an improvisational and responsive environment. In addition to his solo work, he is currently involved in several projects with musicians from the experimental and independent jazz scene.
Céline Voccia is a French pianist, composer and improviser in the free jazz scene in Berlin. She studied classical piano at the Geneva Conservatory and jazz music and improvisation in Paris and Berlin. Her music is a fusion of jazz language with classical piano technique, culminating in an abstraction of contemporary music with free jazz. Her major influences include Olivier Messiaen and Toru Takemitsu.
