The Austrian magazine Freistil wrote about the trio’s CD release in February 2018: “In Memoriam Global Village is a deep bow to the person and art of Peter Kowald and at the same time a continuation of an advanced tradition as an irresistibly intensive, complex, wholeheartedly grown twelve-part piece of music that could not be imagined more beautifully. Respect!”

Xu Fengxia, Gunda Gottschalk and Peter Jacquemyn have richly inherited from meeting and working with Peter Kowald. The start of a variety of cooperations was marked by Kowald’s 365 Tage am ORT 1995 (“365 days at the ORT in 1995”). From 1995 to 2002, Xu and Gottschalk formed the basic trio of Peter Kowald’s Global Village Ensemble, which brought together musicians from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds. Global Village has given concerts in formations ranging from trio to sextet in Europe and the USA. Gunda Gottschalk has been working with Peter Jacquemyn since 1995 as the duo e pericoloso sporgersi. They produced duo CDs in 1996 and 2017.

The understanding of the most diverse musical cultures through the dialogue of improvisation has since then continued in the work of Gottschalk, Xu and Jacquemyn. In 2017 they formed for the first time for the global village instrumentation with violin, guzeng and double bass. On their successful China tour in autumn 2017, where they presented their CD for the first time, they became more and more a unit.

Andreas Fellinger wrote about their performance at the Ulrichsberger Kaleidophon International Festival 2019: “For some it is even the highlight of the weekend, but certainly the most extraordinary performance of this year’s Kaleidophon: As soon as the three join into the energetically highly concentrated tutti, the rotten walls of the Jazzatelier start shaking. It has nothing to do with world music, a lot with Peter Kowald, and everything with highly intensive, diversified impro music.”
