The #freesolo project explores the tension between autocracy and democracy, the balance between action and reaction, the balance between loud demands and careful listening. To this end, the Stegreif Orchester examines the solo concerto and the classical orchestral apparatus for its contrasting forms of conducting. Improvisation plays a leading role and forms the musical means of this project through the development of individual solo to collaborative group improvisations.
The third #improcerto is dedicated to an era of classical music in which musical conventions were broken on many levels: the 20th century. The sound and onomatopoeia of Impressionism, the aleatoric music of Boulez and Cage, the twelve-tone technique and microtonality are just a few prominent examples of a comprehensive rethinking of harmony, sound, melody and noise. This is where #improcerto #3 comes in, asking where improvisation finds its place, recontextualising and questioning selected works of the 20th century. Various chamber music ensembles and tutti passages alternate with solo improvisations, promising a varied concert evening.
As composer in residence, composer, pianist and improviser Noam Sivan will work with the Stegreif Orchester to develop a stylistic repertoire that emerges in the moment and critically examines current musical practice.
