Saadet Türköz (TR/CH): voice
Bo-Sung Kim (KR/DE): korean percussion
Gunda Gottschalk (DE): violin, viola
Ute Völker (DE): accordion
Four women of strong character form a quartet and dedicate themselves to free improvisation. Each of them brings her experience and musical roots to this formation. In their interplay they discover archaic forms of expression and new worlds of sound. The music tells of growing and fading, of laughing and crying, of home and strangeness. Their concerts are journeys with unknown maps of the world. Ensemble Ay takes the listener on winding roads into the unknown.
Two poles characterize the work of singer Saadet Türköz: on the one hand, free jazz and improvisation, which she got to know in her adopted country of Switzerland. On the other hand, the oral and musical tradition of the highlands of Central Asia, Turkey and Kazakhstan. Born in South Korea and raised in Berlin, percussionist Bo-Sung Kim stands for traditional Korean arts as well as for genre-crossing modern performances. She combines tradition and modernity in contemporary interdisciplinary projects. With her unique accordion sound, Ute Völker sounds in all registers of contemporary new music. The musician, who lives in Wuppertal, knows how to demonstrate her improvisational skills in ever new and interesting combinations. Gunda Gottschalk improvises on the violin and speaks her own language. The sonorous sound of the violin is enhanced by experimental playing. Based in Wuppertal, she sometimes takes off into the world and sometimes to her own front door.
