MONDOLETTOSOTTOILCORVO, a project by Willehad Grafenhorst and Gandolfo Pagano, brings together the musical experiences of two musicians who grew up in opposite regions of Europe. They met in the Madonie region of Sicily, where they were surprised by the immediately noticeable synergy of their collaboration – a moment that led to the creation of this project. Improvisation is understood here as a practice in which every action is generated by listening to each other, resulting in a lively dialogue. The musicians interact continuously, providing impulses, with each action being both the cause and effect of unpredictable developments that result in real compositions. Both musicians regularly work together with colleagues from the fields of music and dance. Percussionist Fabricio Spera and dancer Fine Kwiatkowski have been invited as guests for the LAUTE STILLE project. In the first set, the concert will be presented as a purely musical performance; in the second set, the dance will audibly and visibly change the soundscape. How will the concert space of the exploratorium be experienced by the audience?
Since the 2000s, Willehad Grafenhorst’s work has focussed on the production of interactive dance-video-music performances in the duo cri du coeur with Fine Kwiatkowski. Grafenhorst’s electronic music is created from the natural sounds of stringed instruments such as bass guitar, contrabass balalaika and Hawaiian guitar, which he processes using digital applications based on Pure Data software.
Gandolfo Pagano is a co-founder of various groups, including Enterico Trio, Nero Diaspora, Trio Soleil and Torba. He has worked with renowned musicians such as Tim Hodgkinson, Fabrizio Spera, Tristan Honsinger, Eugene Chadbourne, Thomas Lehn, Mark Dresser and many others.
Fabrizio Spera has been active for years as a musician and organiser in the field of experimental music, at the interface between improvisation, creative jazz and experimental rock. He is a founding member of groups such as Ossatura, Roots Magic, Eco d’Alberi, Torba and others. He has collaborated with artists such as Wadada Leo Smith, Larry Ochs, Peter Kowald, John Butcher and many more and has played at festivals and concerts in Europe, the USA, Canada, Japan, Korea and the Middle East.
Fine Kwiatkowski has been working with musicians from the fields of improvisation, contemporary music and new music since the 1980s. Another focus of her work is her collaboration with visual artists. The fusion of the arts and acting as equals in space is particularly important to her. She founded the duo cri du coeur with Willehad Grafenhorst in 2003 and expanded her work to include the genre of video film.
