“Celebrate the trombone!” – this is how trumpeter Nate Wooley describes the trio of Jeb Bishop, Matthias Müller, and Matthias Muche, who have been exploring the sonic possibilities of the trombone since 2016 with a mix of rigour, curiosity, and playfulness. Rather than treating the instrument as a fixed entity, their work opens it up as a field of possibilities: technically demanding, sonically unpredictable, and intensely physical.
Out of many years of collaboration across Europe and the United States, a distinct musical language has emerged, documented on the albums Konzert für Hannes and From A to B, as well as in a wide range of live recordings from their international tours. Improvisation, density, and sonic boundary-pushing form the basis of a continuously expanding archive of material and situations.
For this project, the trio extends its practice through a collaboration with US composer and media artist Olivia Block. Drawing on recordings from their US tour, they develop a multichannel sound installation that enters into live interaction with the trio on stage. Block contributes electronics, synthesizer, prepared piano, and physically engaged sound actions, creating a shared performance environment.
