Harmonic Space Orchestra‘s Expansions 2026/27 concert series features four new commissions, drawing on inter-generational talent with varied aesthetic orientations, but united by a shared fascination with just intonation.
Triangulations refers to interpersonal roles, such as active, passive, and flexible as well as direct sonic characteristics like tonality, spectrality, and noise; and poetic aspects such as transparency, opacity, and totality. It is Catherine Lamb‘s first piece specifically written for HSO – an ensemble Lamb herself helped to form, showcasing the rare and distinctive skills of this collective of performers and composers devoted to a conception of harmony grounded in the natural acoustics of sound and resonance.
Catherine Lamb, born in 1982 in Olympia, Washington, explores the relationships between elementary sonic structures, tonality, and perception in her music. After studying Hindustani music in Pune, she studied with James Tenney and Michael Pisaro at the California Institute of the Arts and subsequently completed an MFA in Music/Sound at Bard College. Her artistic development was also shaped by her collaboration with filmmaker and Dhrupad musician Mani Kaul and a research stay with Éliane Radigue in Paris. Lamb’s compositions combine precisely defined sonic processes with a pronounced attention to transitions, resonances, and the temporal unfolding of sound. Her works have been performed by ensembles including the JACK Quartet, Ensemble neoN, Dedalus, and the London Contemporary Orchestra. She has lived and worked in Berlin since 2013. Her work has received numerous awards and fellowships, including the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundations Composition Prize in 2020.
