Concert + Talk in English

Svetlana Maraš (RS / CH) – electronics
Biliana Voutchkova (BG / DE) – violin, voice

Moderation: Mathias Maschat

As a prelude to our symposium Erfahrungsraum Improvisation, the Serbian sound artist Svetlana Maraš and the Bulgarian-German violinist Biliana Voutchkova are guests in our concert series Sound & Lecture. Moderated by Mathias Maschat, the two experienced improvisers and improvisation teachers talk about what improvisation means to them and what concerns them, as teachers, with the mediating their art.

Svetlana Maraš has given numerous courses for children and has been appointed professor for creative music technology and co-director of the Basel electronic studio at the FHNW University of Music ((Fachhochschule Nordwestschweiz) from September 2021. Biliana Voutchkova gives international workshops at universities and festivals and is also a workshop leader at the exploratorium. Musically, Svetlana Maraš and Biliana Voutchkova build on their long-term collaboration with new ideas.

Svetlana Maraš works at the intersection of experimental music, sound art and new media. Graduated at the renowned Aalto University (Helsinki) where she worked as a research assistant, she also received training at places like Bang on a Can Summer Institute (MASSMoCA), Columbia University – School of the Arts, Mozarteum Summer Academy, KlangKunstBühne at UDK (Berlin), The Berklee Summer School, Darmstadt International Summer Course, and many other places. Her article Thingification of compositional process – emergence and autonomy of extra-musical object in Western Art Music was published as a book chapter in 2017. Svetlana Maraš often gives workshops and masterclasses on programming and new music technology for kids and adults, and she lectures on topics related to experimental music and sound art. As composer in residence and artistic director of Radio Belgrade’s Electronic Studio since 2016, she has initiated various projects and activities such as EMS Synthi 100 restoration, artist residencies and educational programs.

Biliana Voutchkova is a devoted interdisciplinary artist, violinist, performer, composer, improviser and curator. Her constant creative research spans the widest possible range of sound, movement and vision. Her extended sonic, technical and physical capacities evolved into the development of a highly individual artistic language. Based between Berlin and her rural residency on the black sea coast of Bulgaria, Biliana Voutchkova works internationally as a soloist, in group and collaborative settings and with renowned ensembles. Her often unconventional projects include original site specific works, performances, concerts, long durational and multi-disciplinary formats. Alongside her other activities, she is constantly engaged with the organization and presentation of informal non-institutional events, reaching out and building lasting relationships to her local communities.
